The Great Garden

Gardening together can be a wonderful way for kids to learn where food comes from and what all living things need to grow.

Things to notice while you're gardening:

When planting look closely at the shapes and sizes of different seeds
When harvesting look at the colors, sizes and shapes of foods
Compare the plants in your garden - how tall, how bushy, what texture?
Have a tasting party. Cut the fruits and vegetables into bite size chunks and have the family try tastes. For reluctant eaters try dips such as honey, yogurt and chocolate.
Make a MyYard salad and use only ingredients from your garden.
Take a picture of the plants as they grow - date them. Create a MyYard scrapbook with the pictures.

Playing with seeds and seed pods
Gather seeds that fly, float, hitchhike, and are eaten by animals - make a seed variety poster
Put a sock over your shoe or hand and walk through the garden touching plants. Collect hitchhiker seeds and look closely to see how they stick
Look for nuts that have been partially eaten
Put your seeds in a shallow bowl of water and let sit - what happens after three or four days?
